My Visit To The Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre

The Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation was established by the friends, family, and associates of Shehu Yar’Adua to honor and memorialize his legacy as a foremost Nigerian politician.

On arrival, you’re greeted with beautiful scenery that feels like democracy, a wide hall that leads to different parts of the building. My stop was the museum; you can hear the electronic sound that seems to be like a narrator from the entrance.

I first visited the center in November 2022. In light of the recent result of the Nigerian National Presidential election, it feels like the right time to share my thoughts on the center and ‘democracy’. The Shehu Musa Yar’Adua center puts you in a trance, it's like a nostalgic feeling of all the suffering once suffered.

Reading about his time and death in prison was devastating, he seemed like the kind of man that would fight against baron lords seeking to feast on the ruins of a country.

Finding out that INEC has been consistent in election drama made me feel hopeless.

Just when you think you can’t feel any more sorrow, you enter an aesthetically pleasing chamber (that kinda of gave me the creeps) and you see letters written to him while he was in prison, that was touching.

People have died for Nigeria, people are still dying for Nigeria. I felt great disappointment.

Approaching the end of my tour, I stopped to watch the TV that had kept me company all through the tour, it looked like 2015, Former president Goodluck and late president Umar Musa Yar’Adua holding their fists up in the air together and the narrator went on about beautiful and hopeful events soon to come.

At the end of my tour, I read the reflections of past visitors and my heart melted. Second time visiting and it was worth every second.

The museum is open and free to the public, other parts of the building have restrictions. I did manage to enter the library and it's calm, and cozy I’d recommend it if you need a place to work outside of your home, a year’s registration to the library is N15,000.
